Tiphys

Tiphys (Greek Τῖφυς ) is a figure from Greek mythology.

He is the son of Hyrmine and Phorbas or Hagnias.

In the Argonautica Tiphys is the first mate of the Argo, the past controls the ship to the dangerous Symplegades. Tiphys dies in the Mariandynern on the Black Sea from a disease. He is buried next to the seer Idmon, who had recently had an accident before. His death plunges the Argonauts in deep despair, and they almost give their ride on. Finally, Ancaeus offers, a son of Poseidon, as the new helmsman, and the Argonauts make another journey.

The Boeotian coast city Tipha who was proud of the many good sailors, they had produced, Tiphys was considered a local hero.
