Tipton is a city and administrative headquarters simultaneously ( County Seat) of Tipton County in the U.S. state of Indiana. In 2010 there lived 5106 inhabitants.

Geography

Tipton is located at 40 ° 17'6 " north latitude and 86 ° 2'25 " west longitude. About 50 kilometers away is Indianapolis. The highways Interstate 65 and Interstate 69 run at a distance of 40 kilometers east or west past Tipton.

History

The city took the name of Tipton in honor of Brigadier General John Tipton in for his services in several wars. It was founded in 1844, five years after the death of John Tipton. Also, the County was named in his honor Tipton County.

Since 1969, the Tipton County Pork Festival ( Tipton Pork Festival) will be held in Tipton. The pig is widely used in the region and the festival is an occasion to show agricultural products to hold a parade and invite them to barbecue with spare ribs. Traditionally, the festival always takes place on Labor Day each year.

Demographic data

In 2010 a population of 5106 persons was determined, which is a decrease compared to 2000 by 2.8%. The average age of residents in 2010 was 39.9 years, which corresponded to exactly the average of the State of Indiana. The ancestors of some 20 % of residents are from Germany.
