Tito Cilliander

Tito Colliander ( born February 10, 1904 in St. Petersburg, Russia, † May 21, 1989 in Helsinki, Finland ) was a Swedish writer finland.

Life and work

Tito Colliander was born to Finnish parents. His father was a Colonel in the Imperial Army. His childhood was spent alternately in Russia and in Finland, which was a Russian Grand Duchy. Both parents were Protestant. In Petrograd he experienced the First World War and the Revolution. The experiences of this time, such as hunger, misery and cruelty were formative for his literary work. In the fall of 1918 he was able to flee to Finland, where he devoted himself to art studies in Helsinki. After studying and years of travel in Paris and Algeria, he turned increasingly to writing.

In 1930, he married the artist Ina Behrsen, the daughter of a St. Petersburg German family of architects. In 1936 he moved with his wife to a Russian-speaking village in southeastern Estonia. There, the Protestant couple converted to the Orthodox Church. In the period of the Second World War, the family had to move often with their two daughters and eventually found a safe haven in Sweden. In 1947, the marriage of Tito and Ina got into a serious crisis. Ina therefore went for a month at the monastery of Valaam, which was the site of the present monastery Uusi Valamo then. There, she met the schema monk John, who was known in a row with Tito. According to Ina the teachings and guidance of the monk John saved the marriage. In the late 1940s Tito studied in a seminary and taught orthodox religion at Swedish schools in Helsinki.

During this time he interrupted his literary activity for about ten years. In 1952 his work Asketernas väg ( road of ascetics ), in which he reflects the teaching of the Eastern Church Fathers. In 1958 he resumed his literary activity. Vi som är kvar appeared in 1959 and in the other he devoted himself to his autobiography, published in seven volumes and are considered his most important work. 1968 awarded him the Åbo Akademi doctorate of theology honoris causa. In 1975 he received the Literature Prize of the Evangelical Church. Tito's son Sergius is a priest of the Finnish Orthodox Church.
