Tjörnes is a municipality in the north of Iceland. It is located in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 58 inhabitants.

Geography

The community takes up most of the Tjörnes peninsula between the Öxarfjörður the east and the Bay Skjálfandi a in the West. The community is surrounded to the south by the municipality of Norðurþing and to the north by the Atlantic Ocean.

The nearest large settlement is Húsavík.

History

One of incorporation to Húsavík was issued in a referendum on October 8, 2005, a cancellation.

Population Development

Like most areas except the southwest of Iceland around the capital, Reykjavík Tjörnes of rural-urban migration is affected. From 1997 to 2006, the population decline was 24%.
