Toby Jug Nebula

1200

IC 2220, AM 0755-585, ESO 124-3

IC 2220 is a 1200 light years distant reflection nebula in the constellation keel of the boat, which is listed in the index catalog.

The reflection nebula consists of a cloud of gas and dust that is illuminated from within by the star HD 65750. The star belongs to the type of red giant and has five times the mass of our sun. Although he is relatively young, with its 50 million years, it is in a much advanced stage of his life. In this phase, the star continuously loses some of its mass to the environment. This material cools and forms the gas and dust cloud. The dust consists of elements such as carbon and simple, heat-resistant molecules such as titanium dioxide and calcium oxide. For IC 2220, detailed investigations have shown the object in infrared light that silica is probably the part that is most likely responsible for the reflection of starlight.
