History

The areas in the region of Río Toltén were conquered by the Spanish conquistadors never right. The river forms the northern boundary of the territory of the Huilliche, a strain of the Mapuche. From 1604 to 1881 here governed the Mapuche virtually unrestricted, after they had been recognized by the Spaniards as sovereign. Only after the violent appropriation of the indigenous settlements by the Chilean state, the area south of Temuco in 1883 was settled by whites again.
