Tom Kirkwood

Thomas Burton Loram Kirkwood CBE ( born July 6, 1951 in Durban, South Africa ) is a British biologist and gerontologist.

Career

Kirkwood studied at Cambridge and Oxford biology and mathematics. From 1981 to 1993 he worked at the National Institute for Medical Research. He was Britain's first professor of biogerontology at the University of Manchester in 1993. He was appointed to the Newcastle University in 1999. He is co-director of the Institute for Ageing and Health and Director of Gerontology.

Work areas

Since 1975, Kirkwood engaged in gerontology. In 1977 he introduced the disposable soma theory as a model for the evolution of aging.

2009 Kirkwood Commander of the Order of the British Empire ( CBE) was. In 2011 he was awarded the Longevity Prize of the IPSEN Foundation.
