Tom Webster (cartoonist)

Gilbert Thomas Webster ( born July 17, 1886 in Bilston, Staffordshire, England; † 21 June 1962, Highgate, Middlesex ) was a British caricaturist and cartoonist.

Life and career

Born in the West Midlands, England specializing mainly on sports cartoons. Webster generally worked in an office of a railway company and taught himself to draw. In 1904 he won a cartoon character competition an English newspaper. That was the beginning of his career. His first job was the Birmingham Sports Argus, then came the Evening News and then the Daily Mail. He specialized in cartoons for equestrian sport, cricket and golf. Webster worked 20 years for the Daily Mail. The Englishman also drew important political personalities. His success was so great that in an election in 1929, his drawings were exhibited in Trafalgar Square. In 1940 he ended his relationship of trust with the Daily Mail and henceforth worked as a freelancer various English newspapers until 1960. Died in 1962 Tom Webster at the age of 76 years.
