Tom Wood (photographer)

Tom Wood ( born January 14, 1951 in County Mayo, Western Ireland ) is an Irish photographer. His photographs have been featured in numerous exhibitions and published in several photo books.

Life

Tom Wood studied from 1973 to 1976 painting ( BAHons. ) at Leicester Polytechnic. He lived 1978-2003 in Merseyside / Liverpool. From 1980 to 1984 he was a lecturer in photography at Liverpool Polytechnic & Southport College of Art until 1986 at Wirral Metropolitan College in Wallasey. There he taught until 1998 Fine Art, Design and Photography, 1997-1998 Wood was also PT Lecturer in Fine Art and Graphic Design at the John Moores University Liverpool. Today he lives in Wales.

Work

Tom Wood's photographic works are characterized by a direct, open views from its living environment. His long-term projects often revolve around people's everyday lives, the classic portrait, situations on the road and at home, in recent years also landscapes. Wood's style can be described as social documentary, but does not have a fixed concept after. His paintings emerge spontaneously and are composed unconventional. In the series you can see an honest and humorous attitude of the photographers at all confrontation never loses respect for his opponent. In recent years he has increasingly combined recordings of people from the personal environment with which in other contexts.

Wood works with a miniature camera in 35mm format, but also used medium and large format cameras for portraits. Until the late 1980s, he photographed mostly to black / white negative film, then on color negative film. For a few years he has also more of the landscape and include this with a panoramic camera. His photographs, which are listed by title, place and year, he presents in exhibitions and photo books, where he also repeatedly combines old and new images from the archive. Tom Wood is bystander in the standard works. A History of Street Photography by Colin Wester Beck and Joel Meyerowitz ( 2nd ed. Boston 2001) and The Photobook. A History - Volume 2 by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger (London 2006) represented.
