Tomás Bretón

Tomás Breton ( born December 29, 1850 in Salamanca, † December 2, 1923 in Madrid) was a Spanish composer.

Life

Tomás Breton came from a poor family, was very musical and studied violin so successful that he became concertmaster of the orchestra from his native city at the age of 14 years. He then continued his education in Madrid. Here he soon began to compose and achieved initial success. He finally turned to the Opera and Zarzuela and could bring in 1874 and 1875 first musical works are performed. Scholarships enabled him afterwards abroad. After his return to the Spanish capital he could surpass his previous successes and was considered the end of the 19th century as one of the foremost representatives of the Spanish music scene. He also worked as a teacher of composition at the Madrid Conservatory and music writer.

Importance

Breton was one of the main representatives of the Spanish opera and zarzuela of the Renaissance in the second half of the 19th century. In addition to his popular stage works he created some purely instrumental works.
