Tomás Monje

Tomás Monje Gutiérrez ( born December 21, 1884 in Coroico, † July 1, 1959 in La Paz ) was a Bolivian politician, lawyer and judge at the " Corte Superior de Justicia ". From 15 August 1946 to 10 April 1947, he was the 41st President of Bolivia.

Life

From a young age was Monje Tomás Gutiérrez on the side of the socialist movement in Bolivia. He studied law and went through a career in judicial service to the office of President of the Supreme Court.

To the President, he was appointed by the leaders of the coup against President Gualberto Villarroel López in his capacity as the most senior judges in the country. This should have happened to be immediately after the fall of President Villarroel. But Monje illness could not take the oath of office first, so that to his deputy, was used at the Tribunal, Néstor Guillén Olmos, who stayed 27 days in office until Monje had recovered.

Monje President took office in a severe economic crisis with growing impoverishment of a large part of the population. Monje signed a 14-point charter for the receipt of all social gains for the "simple people " ( gente humilde ) and in particular for workers. He also had to change the constitution and - that was his main job as interim president - preparing for new elections before. Then he handed over his office to the election winner Enrique Hertzog Garaizabal.
