Tomaz Salomão

Tomaz Augusto Salomão ( born October 16, 1954 in Inharrime, Inhambane Province ) is a Mozambican politician and economist and current Secretary-General of the Southern African Development Community ( SADC).

In 1972 he graduated as a chartered accountant. In 1976, the business degree at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, on which he also taught between 2002 and 2004. In addition Salomão was awarded the academic degree of Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA.

Salomão was nearly two decades working in senior positions in the policy of Mozambique. From 1983 to 1989 he was Minister of Defense, as well as between 1990 and 1999 in the Finance and Planning Ministry working. First Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning and later in 1994 he headed the ministry. At the same time to his position as finance minister was Salomão representatives of Mozambique with the African Development Bank. Between 2000 and 2004 he was Minister of Transport and Communications of SADC. He also held at this time other international positions held, including from 2003 to 2004 for the African Union. In the parliamentary elections of 2004 Tomaz Salomão was elected Member of Parliament.

At the Summit of Heads of State and Government of SADC in August 2005 Salomão was appointed Secretary General of the SADC.
