Tomislav Volek

Tomislav Volek (born 11 October 1931 in Prague) is a Czech musicologist who specifically deals with Mozart.

Life

Volek studied 1950-1955 musicology and history at the Charles University in Prague, he was until 1964 assistant at the Chair of Musicology Faculty of Arts, 1965-1976 research assistant at the Institute of Musicology of the Academy of Sciences. During the communist regime he tried means Reviews and Articles about well-known foreign researchers ( Georgiades, Besseler, Merriam, Lissa and others) to present alternatives to the Czech Marxist dogmatists. After he ' declined during the political, normalization, his comments in the article Some remarks on the subject of music and politics from an anthropological point of view ( in: About music and politics, Mz 1971) to revoke, he lost the end of 1976 the post in the academy and worked to 1989 freelance. Rehabilitated in 1990, he was re-employed at the Institute of Musicology at the Czech Academy of Sciences until 2002 and headed the Institute of Musicology at the Faculty seminar. Habilitated in 1998.

A good part of his professional activities, he devoted himself to the music history of Bohemia in the 18th century and especially the Mozart research.

Through a series of Mozart's works, he presented basic source studies and research on the creation and performance history. Here he devoted himself primarily to premiered in the Estates Theatre in Prague opera Don Giovanni (1787 ) and La Clemenza di Tito (1791 ).

Volek is president of the Czech Mozart Society and member of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Trivia

Tomislav Volek had already in 1960 - met Elisabeth Schmidt, the future wife of the writer Uwe Johnson and also corresponded with her after the wedding - even before the wedding. Johnson was ( mistakenly ) believe that there must be at the Prague penpal his wife to be a Secret Agent of the Czech and East German secret police. 1978 Elizabeth Johnson separated from her husband, who could not get over her relationship with Volek.
