Tomos

Tomos (short for Tovarna Motornih Vozil, literally translated as Factory for motor vehicles; originally Tovarna motornih koles Sežana = factory for motorcycles Sežana ) is a factory in Koper (Slovenia, former Yugoslavia), which produces mopeds and earlier cars under License from Citroën produced.

History

Founded in 1954, it was known by the construction of mopeds, small motorcycles and outboard motors. Around 1970, a motorcycle of 750cc class was built, the model Tomos Norton Fastback TN 750. The beginnings were based on designs of the Puch works ( Austria ). A moped series based on the Puch MS 50, another on the Puch Maxi. Later Tomos realized numerous in-house developments, among other things, for the sport of racing motorcycles use.

From 1960, the Citroën 2CV was built for the Yugoslav market at Tomos, and later models Citroën Ami 6, Ami 8 Citroën and Citroën Dyane. In 1972, Citroën, Iskra and Tomos, the new company Cimos to continue the automobile production.

The Citroën 2CV, known in Germany duck had, in Yugoslavia the nickname Spacek (also Spale or Spaja ) derived from Sitroen ( transcription for Citroën) and Pacek ( diminutive of Patka = duck ) and Paja Patak = Donald Duck.

Between 1981 and 1982, at least a prototype of a three-wheeled mini-car was built. The Tomos Triko but did not go into mass production.

Since 1966 Tomos two-wheelers were also built in Epe (Netherlands). On 1 December 2009, the production in Epe is set and moved to the Slovenian headquarters.

Today

Today, the company focuses still on the production of mopeds, but is also a major supplier to the motorcycle fabrication of BMW.

The sister model of the Austrian Puch Maxi is still brand new available in an updated form. Some dealers carry this relationship on even as a selling point. example:
