Tonto National Monument

The Tonto National Monument is located in central Arizona in the United States. The area is located in the extreme northwest of the Sonoran Desert, and thus in an extremely water- poor area with less than 50 inches of rainfall a year. The only source of water is the Salt River, which carries water all year round.

Well-preserved Pueblobauten the Salado Indians are from the 13th to the early 15th century. The sedentary Indians practiced agriculture here and supplement their diet by hunting and gathering wild plants. The Salado dominated both the pottery and the weaving, as evidenced by findings in the southwest. Numerous finds are displayed in the visitor center. The archaeological sites of the Tonto National Monument Archeological District have been included in the National Register of Historic Places Directory on 15 October 1966.
