Tony Earl

Anthony Scully "Tony" Earl ( born April 12, 1936 in Lansing, Michigan) is an American politician. He was from 1983 to 1987 the 41th Governor of Wisconsin.

Early years

Tony Earl studied until 1958 at Michigan State University and then to 1961 at the University of Chicago. He then entered the U.S. Navy until 1965 soldier. Between 1965 and 1966 he was a deputy district attorney in Marathon County and from 1965 to 1969 he was attorney for the city of Wausau. In 1969 he was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in the Wisconsin State Assembly; there he remained until 1974. since 1970, he was leader of the Democrats. Between 1975 and 1980 he was a member of the state government, first as Minister of Administration ( Department of Administration) and then as Minister for the exploration and exploitation of natural resources ( Department of Natural Resources ). Between 1980 and 1982 he took a political break and worked as an employee of a large law firm. In 1982 he was elected governor of his state, where he prevailed with 56.8 percent of the vote against Republican Terry Kohler.

Governor of Wisconsin

Earl took office on January 3, 1983. At this time the state of Wisconsin was burdened with a budget deficit of one billion dollars and the unemployment rate was twelve percent. A scheduled by the governor health care reform was rejected by Parliament. In labor law, the governor had to deal with the unions, which were soon dissatisfied with his policies, especially with the freezing of wages and salaries, but also with other measures. After his four-year term on January 5, 1987 Earl was working as a lawyer in Madison again. He specializes in environmental law and is a partner in a large law firm. He is also a member of several non-profit organizations to protect the environment.
