Tony Lee (pianist)

Tony Lee ( born July 23, 1934 in London as Anthony Leedham Lee; † 9 March 2004, Esher ) was a British jazz pianist.

Life and work

Lee was self-taught as a pianist. After his military service, he performed the part in Germany, he turned to music. His trio with bassist Tony Archer played since the mid-1960s, most recently as the house trio at the Bull 's Head. In the late 1960s he was a member of the quintet of Phil Seamen and was at its albums Phil Seamen Now!. . . Live! (1968 ) and on Phil Seamen Meets Eddie Gomez ( 1968) involved. His solo debut Electric Piano (1971 ) was compared with the work of Burt Bacharach. During the 1970s he played in, which was founded by Jack Parnell all-star band "The Best of British Jazz" with Don Lusher, Kenny Baker, Betty Smith and Tony Archer, which existed until 1985.

He also worked with Tommy Whittle, Terry Smith, Tubby Hayes and Dick Morrissey and Tom Jones and Dusty Springfield. He also accompanied American jazz musicians such as Barney Kessel, Sonny Stitt and Eddie Lockjaw Davis.
