Topgallant sail

A topsail is a sail, which is struck on a framework of the topgallant mast.

Due to the areal increase in the sails during the development of the shipbuilding and better handling of smaller sail the topsail was just like the topsail in the late 19th century often divided on merchant ships. If such a division, it is called the upper and Unterbramsegel. Since there can be several masts on ships, the name of the mast is placed in front of the sail designation to distinguish the sails. This is how terms like: Großunterbramsegel, Kreuzoberbramsegel etc.

By sharing possibilities of Mars and topsails, depending on the type of division, the Bram or the Unterbramsegel at the third or fourth position of the bottom of the mast to be struck.
