Torbern Bergman

Torbern Olof Bergman ( born March 20, 1735 in Låstad, Västergötland, † July 8, 1784 in Medevi (now part of the municipality of Motala ) ) was a Swedish chemist and mineralogist.

Life and work

Bergman studied at Uppsala University, where he was 1758 Lecturer of Physics, 1767, professor of chemistry and pharmacology (as successor by Johan Gottschalk Wallerius ). In 1764 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, in 1765 the Royal Society in London in 1772 and the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala.

Bergman difference between the first organic and inorganic substances. He is considered the founder of analytical chemistry.

According to him, the uranium mineral Torbernite and the crater Bergman is named on the moon.
