A Torch Song is a sentimental form of love song, in which typically the singer did not return on the or the lost love laments.

It was mainly singers of popular songs that were referred to as " torch singers " and their repertoire consisted mainly of appropriate material. Torch singing is more of a niche as a genre and extends to the traditional jazz vocals, although the American tradition of Torch songs based more on the melodic structure of the blues. The name comes from the English phrase to carry a torch for someone (German: " someone secretly, eagerly worship, yearn for someone ").

Film and theater

There are several films and theater productions that took up the subject. Mentioned are the two same films Torch Song (1953 ), directed by Charles Walters ( with Joan Crawford, Michael Wilding, Gig Young) and the TV production Torch Song (1993 ) by director Michael Miller ( with Raquel Welch, Jack Scalia, Alicia Silverstone ). A satirical film about a gay is the film Torch Song Trilogy - The Cuckoo's Egg ( U.S. Original Title: Torch Song Trilogy ) from 1988 with director Paul Bogart and starring Anne Bancroft, Matthew Broderick, Harvey Fierstein, Brian Kerwin. The film was based on Harvey Fiersteins Tony -winning three-part stage play The Torch Song Trilogy.
