Tormes

The two cathedrals of Salamanca over the river Tormes

The Tormes is a 247 km long river that flows through the Spanish provinces of Ávila and Salamanca.

Geography

The river rises on the northern side of the Sierra de Gredos in the province of Ávila and flows in the province of Salamanca in the Duero.

Reservoirs

The river was not enough water to supply the settled villages on its banks sufficiently during the summer months; therefore the end of 1960 we created the artificial lake of Santa Teresa with a volume of 496 million cubic meters, which supplies the villages in the summer with water and in the winter accommodates the large incoming volumes of water. Furthermore, there is near the mouth of the Tormes in the Duero, the Almendra Dam.

Inflows

The Tormes is fed by several tributaries:

  • Arroyo Zurguén
  • Río Corneja
  • Rio Almar
  • Río Becedillas
  • Arroyo Caballeruelo
  • Río Alhándiga
  • Río Valvanera
  • Río Aravalle
