Navamorales

Navamorales is a centrally Spanish municipality ( municipio ) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile -Leon.

Location

Navamorales is located near the confluence of the Río Corneja in the Río Tormes nearly 75 km ( driving distance ) southeast of the provincial capital of Salamanca; the city of Ávila is approximately 83 km in a north-easterly direction away. The remarkable neighboring Piedrahíta is only about 15 kilometers to the east.

Demographics

From 1900 to 1950, the population was stable between 700 and 800 people.

Economy

The agriculture, especially livestock, traditionally plays the largest role in the economy of the small mountain community. Revenue from tourism in the form of the rental of apartments ( casas rurales ) have been added in recent decades.

History

In prehistoric grave mound ( tumulus ), and some Roman and Islamic coins were found on the territory of the municipality, but this is no evidence of a permanent settlement. The Islamic march beginning of the 8th century led on the contrary to a depopulation ( depoblación ) of the formerly Christian territories that have been repopulated in the 11th and 12th centuries ( repoblación ). In 1833, the city of the province of Ávila came to the province of Salamanca.

Attractions

  • The tumulus El turrion is one of the few of its kind that were built in such a high altitude and, moreover, far from the coasts. According to present knowledge it seems to belong not to the megalithic culture, but of a later culture.
  • The three-nave parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad retains a Altar of churrigueresken style elements from the period around 1700.
