History

From the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century BC settled here tribal groups of the Celtic tribe of Vettones; in the period of Roman rule, the area belonged to the province of Lusitania. After the largely bloodless reconquest ( Reconquista ) from the hands of the Moors and repopulated ( repoblación ) of the nearly deserted mountain region in the 11th and 12th centuries the area for centuries between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Kingdom of León ( later the Kingdom of Castile ) was controversial. However, the Castilian kings handed over the territory in 1340 to the care of individual landowners ( señores ), which henceforth took over border security until the 15th century, the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, it transferred the Dukes of Alba.

Attractions

  • The standing on the outskirts keep ( torre de homenaje ) remembers - like the one in neighboring Sobradillo - at the time of border disputes with Portugal. It dates from the 14th/15th. century; from the once associated castle ( castillo ) the foundations are only recognizable. The former entrance to the tower is approximately three meters high and could only be reached by means of ladders; today's staircase is a later addition. The medieval building, with its battlements and four semi-circular and unroofed crowd watchtowers now serves as a kind of cultural center.
  • The parish church (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción ) is a building of the 13th century, however, few of the original elements. The late Romanesque Archivolts portal on the south side is framed by a late Gothic Alfiz keel with a curved bow. The bell tower on the west side was added in the 16th century; the choir flank tower on the south side seems to have arisen later. A fire in 1887, the complete interior of the three-nave church was destroyed and then partially replaced by objects from other churches.
  • Opposite the church is a transverse -mounted gate tower with a bell storey whose portal leads into the main street of the village.
  • The church of the Augustinian monastery can be visited on request.
  • The top floor of the town hall ( ayuntamiento ) rests on the facade side on six circular pillars.
  • The Museo del Cantero informed using exhibits and illustrations about the origin and processing of the pending around granite rock.
  • Inaugurated in 2002, Museo del Aceite is located in an old oil mill and is dedicated to the various steps in the production of olive oil.
  • An already badly damaged stone sculpture of a bull or boar Iberian ( Burro de San Antón ) was found near the present-day cemetery.
  • Several hermit churches ( Ermita del Rosario, Ermita del Divino Cordero, Ermita de Jesús el Nazareno, Ermita de los Remedios ) are in the vicinity of the place. Prior to the Ermita del Divino Cordero with its atrium and a beautiful bell tower there is a small square with a stone cross.
