The Tornjaks is a provisionally accepted by the FCI breed from Bosnia- Herzegovina and Croatia ( FCI Group 2, Section 2.2, Standard No. 355 ). The AKC leads the race in May 2012 with a view to a possible recognition in its Foundation Stock Service.
Origin and History
When Tornjaks is a very old type of dog that is mentioned in manuscripts in the 11th century. The name is derived from the word tor, which means " gate guard ". With the decline in Wanderschäfertums the Tornjaks became less and less. In 1972, the remainders were first properly recorded and bred, thereby moving the numbers on a stable level. Description
The Tornjaks has the typical size of a sheep dog with a strong physique. His job was also to defend the flock against predators such as wolves and bears. Male reach a size of 70 cm with a weight of about 50 kg. The coat is weather resistant, slightly wavy, dense with plenty of undercoat. All colors are found, in all combinations: from monochrome to spotted. The ears of the dogs are hanging, easily borne by the head spreading, medium-sized, rounded. Character
On the nature of the dogs are typical livestock guardian dogs, Stubborn in the best sense of the word, defensive, self-employed. Strangers they are reserved until careful not aggressive. They know their territory and behave differently inside than outside.
