Torpa stenhus

Torpa, also Torpa Stenhus, is a castle in the parish Länghem in the community Tranemo in Västergötland. It is 25 km east of Borås and 25 kilometers south of Ulricehamn on the shores of Lake Åsunden. Torpa castle is next to Glimmingehus in Skåne one of the best preserved medieval castles in Sweden. It is family-owned since the 15th century.

Although already mentioned towards the end of the 14th century in documents Torpa is as a farm not shown before 1481. At that time inhabited Imperial Council Arvid Knutsson Torpa, probably erected as a defense against the Danes today's stone castle around 1500. During the 16th and 17th century, some changes were made. The Knights' Hall with its interior and the castle chapel in the Baroque style are well preserved.

Torpa today has four floors, which are connected to each other via two separate staircases in masonry. On the fourth floor, a further walled stairs was exposed to a fifth floor, however, these are probably the staircase of one defense gear. The first and second floor consists of two rooms of different sizes, which are vaulted. A single large space makes each of the third and fourth floors, of which the room on the fourth floor has most of the windows.

In his third marriage Gustav Vasa married composed Torpa derived Catherine Stenbock. The castle now houses a museum.
