Castle Thorn

The Thorn Castle was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussian city of Thorn, today Toruń.

History

Thorn was founded in 1233 by the Order and became a trade center with Poland. 1260 the town was fortified by a castle. The citizens joined the Hanseatic League and the Prussian Confederation and destroyed the castle in 1454. This initiated the Thirteen Years' War. The site remained long unused until it was secured in 1966 and partially reconstructed. Thus, the outer bailey, the so-called Dansker, as in the Marienburg Werder is still preserved, which served as a defense and as a toilet.
