Tosca (1953 EMI recording)

The resulting 1952 by EMI under the baton Victor de Sabatas with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano and Tito Gobbi complete recording of the opera Tosca by Puccini is regarded by many critics as one of the greatest opera recordings of the 50s. The photo was taken together with the Choir and Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala di Milano. It was in 1953, at the peak of popularity Callas published, and came immediately to high praise from the critics. She was also very commercially successful and is still regarded as the best- selling opera recording of all time, although the recording of Puccini's opera La Bohème under the baton of Herbert von Karajan with Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni competes by Decca to this item.

The notoriously demanding de Sabata was consistently pleased with Callas performances, except at the point "E avanti a lui tutta Roma tremava ". Producer Walter Legge stated that Callas de Sabata then in his " Pulverizer " took, but that was time well spent from Legge's point of view.
