Tōshōdai-ji

The Toshodai -ji (Japanese唐 招 提 寺) is a Buddhist temple in Nara, Japan. It was founded by the Chinese monk Jianzhen (Japanese Ganjin ) in the year 759, was buried on the grounds. The Toshodai -ji is the head temple of the Ritsu sect. Its architecture is a classic example of the Tempyo era (天平, ​​729-740 ).

The Lecture Hall ( Kodo ) comes from the Imperial Palace in Nara ( Heijo - kyū ) and is the last remaining original building of the palace.

In the Miei Hall ( mieidō ) is a wooden statue of Jianzhen that is made only once a year from June 5 to 7 publicly available to visitors. More statue are the Buddha statue Rushana ( Vairocana ), a standing thousand-armed Kannon and the statue of the seated Ganjin.

The main hall ( Kondō ) was Jianzhens after death, probably in the year 781, built. From 2000 to 2009/2010 renovation work was carried out on her. It is one of the national treasures of Japan.

1998 Toshodai -ji was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
