Towanda is a small town a few miles east of Wichita, Kansas in Butler County. In 2000, the municipality had 1138 inhabitants and an area of 1.9 km ². The population density of 698.1 / km ². Towanda is located on the Whitewater River, a tributary of the Walnut River.
History
The first settlers in the area was Towandas CL Chandler. He looked back in the area to Towanda for gold, but was unsuccessful. In 1870 they built a trading post in 1892 were added, a blacksmith, a barber shop, a meat market, an office for the doctor, a butcher, a baker, a newspaper and two hotels. On March 31, 1892 at around 9:30 clock, a tornado destroyed almost the entire settlement. Here, 8 of the 300 residents were killed and many more injured.
