Differentiation to the railroad

A powered rail vehicle is referred to as drive vehicle traveling either alone or coupled with other locomotives or non-powered vehicles can carry. If persons or property may be transported by a train, it is called a railcar, or else as a locomotive.

Tractor

A tractor is a vehicle with an internal combustion engine or electric motor, formerly with the steam engine, which is intended to attract other non-powered vehicles (trailers and vans) serving the transportation of goods or persons.

Tractors themselves are not designed for the transport of goods or passengers, but very well have vehicles that are self-propelled and are used to transport goods or passengers, are used as tractor.

Tractor as a road vehicle

The term tractor is used on the road for road vehicles, for example, for the transport of freight cars or heavy loads ( not measured and / or weight equitable freight ).

Tractor

These are colloquially called semi-trailers, traffic laws are but an articulated vehicle.

The combination of vehicles consisting of a tractor, which usually is technically based on a truck chassis, and a semi-trailer. With this combination, a significant portion of the load on the fifth wheel of the tractor unit is worn. Articulated buses are based on the principle of a tractor.

Agriculture and forestry tractor

Agricultural or forestry tractors are determined according to their design for use for agricultural or forestry work and may only be used for such purposes.

Tractor as a vehicle

Tugs are mostly driven by a diesel engine vehicles to tow predominantly agricultural trailers and agricultural machines. They are often equipped with special hydraulic systems to operate lifting devices. Colloquially, they are also referred to as a tractor, tractors or Bulldog.

Tug boat

Tractors are especially strong motorized vessels, which are used to push or pull other ships or large buoyant objects. Most tow lines are used to draw that are mounted on the tractor to hook or rolled on winches.

Tug and Handling

According to DIN ISO 5053 ( DIN 15140 old ) tractors are defined as follows: " tugs are industrial trucks without lifting device. They are used for pulling and pushing another vehicle, primarily of followers. "

Tractors are used in internal transport of loads in large industrial plants. These usually have an electric or diesel drive, but sometimes are also tractors with liquefied petroleum gas ( LPG) - or hybrid drive in use. Electrically driven tractors come due to their emission-free operation, especially used when transport tasks to be faced within closed buildings. Must, however, relatively large distances to be overcome in the open air, diesel and LPG trucks are usually more appropriate. These typically have a greater range than battery- electric vehicles. Hybrid Vehicles have both an electric as well as a diesel engine. They are therefore always ideal when the application profile both indoor use and the overcoming relatively large distances outdoors provides. The maximum trailer loads will be electric tow tractors between 1 tonne and 50 tonnes of diesel and LPG smugglers usually between 10 and 100 tonnes and hybrid tugs typically between 20 and 40 tons.

Historical

Tractors were already known before the introduction of internal combustion engines. They were used with steam power until the 1920s, both for road transport as well as a tractor for field work.

In England, there is still an active hobby scenery to steam-powered tractors which operates their leisure time around the Locomobile. Steam train engine, the traction engine, are regularly participants, the " London Brighton Run", in which only vehicles are registered, which were produced before 1905 at the oldest car race in the world.
