Tranent

Tranent is a town in the Scottish Unitary Authority East Lothian. It is about eleven kilometers west of Haddington and 15 kilometers east of the center of Edinburgh. In 2001, Tranent counted 8892 inhabitants

History

Tranent developed with the coal mining industry, which is operated on this site since the early 13th century. In the area near-surface coal deposits in up to two meters thick coal seams are found. During the Second Jakobitenaufstandes it came partly in the field of the Battle of Prestonpans Tranent. Prestonpans itself is only about a kilometer north. In 1797, recruitment quotas were introduced with the Militia Act. With the massacre of Tranent then followed a bloody clash of military units with a group of objectors.

With the whiskey distillery St. Clement 's Wells was Tranent site of an early distillery. It was founded by George Milne in 1786 and operated until 1833.

Traffic

The A1, which connects Edinburgh with Newcastle runs just north of Tranent. The nearest railway station is located in Prestonpans. It is operated by First ScotRail on the North Berwick line regularly.
