Trans-activation response element (TAR)

The trans -activation response element is part of the genetic code of HIV viruses.

The TAR element has two functions. First, it serves as a detection region for the viral Tat protein that regulates the translation of the virus components. Second, it serves as a precursor micro RNA, which takes influence on the regulation of the host proteins. Above all, the apoptosis of the infected cells is inhibited.
