Transrectal ultrasonography

Transrectal prostate ultrasonography ( TRUS or abbreviated TPS for transrectal ultrasound) is an imaging diagnostic method in which with the help of ultrasound, a recording is made of the internal organs in the pelvic region.

Nomenclature

The precise term is transrectal prostate ultrasonography and is abbreviated as TPS. " Colloquially, " this process is also less precisely referred to as transrectal ultrasound, which is abbreviated as TRUS. In English, the same acronym TRUS is used there for Transrectal ultrasonography.

Method

This method belongs to the class of Sonografien. It is used for the early detection of diseases of the prostate such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer. So it was initially also used mainly. Since prostate cancer screening is done with the help of the determination of PSA, it is also and mainly for precise control during a biopsy of tissue from the prostate applied.

In this case, a probe is inserted into the anus and placed inside of the intestine close to the prostate. The proximity of the prostate to the intestinal wall thereby enables particularly good pictures.
