Treaty of Ancón

The Treaty of Ancon was signed by Peru and Chile on October 20, 1883 in the district of Ancon, Lima, Peru.

The contract should solve the territorial dispute after the Salpeter (1879-1883) to create a stable postwar order. In this war, Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia.

The contract stipulated that Chile got control of the Región de Tarapacá. Chile also occupied for ten years the provinces of Tacna and Arica. After that referendums should regulate subsequent disposition. However, Tacna and Arica stayed much longer time under Chilean occupation because both parties could not agree on the conditions for the referendum.

Finally it came in 1929 under the mediation of U.S. President Herbert Hoover to a solution. The Tacna - Arica compromise struck Chile Arica, Tacna while fell back to Peru.

In addition, Peru received financial compensation from six million U.S. $ and some other concessions.
