Treaty of Wallingford

The Treaty of Wallingford of 1153, also known as the Treaty of Winchester or the Treaty of Westminster, was an agreement between the English King Stephen and his cousin Matilda, with the civil war for the succession of Henry I. was terminated.

The Treaty recognized Stephan Matilda's son, Henry Plantagenet as heir, while Stephen should retain the crown until his death.

Stephan had left near Wallingford build castles to Matilda's partisan attack Brien FitzCount who sat on Wallingford Castle. Henry in turn attacked these castles, and a battle between the two sides was expected.

In this situation, succeeded William d' Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel, to convey the futility of further fighting. A truce was agreed that drove Stephen's son Eustace of Boulogne in the resistance. After Eustach sudden death in August 1153 seems based on this Armistice in November 1153 in Winchester, a more formal agreement to have been negotiated, which was later signed at Westminster.
