Trevor Steven

Trevor McGregor Steven ( born September 21, 1963 in Berwick -upon- Tweed, England ) is an English former football player and was inter alia part of the successful team of Everton FC of the 1980s.

Career

The right-sided midfielder Steven, who distinguished himself by his good vision and precision fit, his football career started at Burnley FC and made his debut for that club in 1981. In the subsequent two seasons, he became a powerful goals preparers and attracted the attention of Howard Kendall, former coach of FC Everton on himself, who built a new team with young players at that time.

Burnley accepted the offer over 300,000 pounds sterling, so that Steven joined Everton in the summer of 1983. The following season, in which Steven was able to contribute immediately, it should mark a turning point for the club under Kendall. Although Everton finished the championship only in seventh place, they reached two cup competitions in the final. After a 0-0 draw in the first League Cup final at Wembley, the club was at the replay again Liverpool against and lost by a goal from Graeme Souness 0:1. In contrast to the still following final of the FA Cup Steven was in the two games not in Kendall's team.

Opponents in the FA Cup final was the Watford FC, Steven and prepared the controversial second goal by Andy Gray in the 2-0 victory with a shot from the right outside line before. He gave the ball high over the penalty box inside and opened a duel between Gray and Steve Sherwood, goalkeeper of Watford FC, both trying to reach the ball. Although Sherwood had caught the ball with both hands, Gray could touch him in this duel with his head, so that the ball from Gray's hands fell into the goal. The results were evaluated by the referee as regular time, although later the Grays action was generally classified as foul.

In the 1984/85 season Steven stabilized on the axis on the right side with the full-back Gary Stevens, who developed into one of the strengths and creative areas of the team. Kendall had now largely completed the remodeling process of Everton FC, and the team could win the English championship for the first time after 15 years. In addition, the team reached the final of the FA Cup, in which one but with 1:3 lost to Manchester United after extra time and thus missed the chance for a double. In addition, Manchester had played with ten men for a long time. A quick consolation for this defeat followed when Everton Austrian club Rapid Vienna defeated in the Rotterdam final of the European Cup Winners' Cup 3-1. Steven shot in this game the second goal after Rapid failed to clear the ball out of the danger zone following a corner and Steven opened the opportunity for a volley at point blank range in front of goal. Prior to this game Steven had already achieved in the semi-final against Bayern Munich a hit.

An exceptional season was crowned for Steven in February 1985, when he was appointed coach Bobby Robson in the England national team and made his debut in a qualifying match for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico against Northern Ireland. He was in the next three internationals an integral part of the team and scored in a friendly against Ireland his first goal for England. Subsequently, he was also in the two draws in the qualifying matches against Romania and Finland it.

In his fifth match against Italy, which took place during a mini- tournament in North America, he made for the first time in England Everton so successful axis with Stevens. However, Steven soon got out competition at his position, as Robson experimented with multiple players on the offensive outer positions. Chris Waddle was in contrast to a Steven extravaganterer and more explosive player (as well as John Barnes on the left side compared to the stoic Steve Hodge ). Ultimately, Robson decided, however for the constancy and Mannschaftsdienlichkeit of Steven, who was in the aftermath of the tribe of players.

Steven scored in the 5-0 victory against the USA in Los Angeles at the end of the tour, his second goal. As Everton struggled both to the English championship and the win the FA Cup again the following year, Steven was a national and international resistant playing at a high level soccer player. In January of 1986 he scored in a 4-0 victory against Egypt in Cairo again a hit and was, during the World Cup tournament drew near steadily employed in the national team.

Everton lost the championship race just against Liverpool on the final day. Also in the FA Cup Everton defeated the same opponent by a 1-3 defeat at Wembley. However, Steven was able to celebrate his nomination in Robson's squad for the World Cup in Mexico.

Robson moved Waddle in England's first game against Portugal. England lost the game 0-1. Despite the weak performance Robson did not change his team, which led to another winless game in a 0-0 draw against Morocco. This meant that England had to win the last group match against Poland in order to remain in the tournament can.

Since Robson Waddle took out of the team, Steven was then given, together with Hodge on the left, his first appearance at the World Championships. This measure paid off when Steven for a combination with Stevens on the right side prepared the first goal by Gary Lineker. Hodge gave the presentation to Lineker's second gate, followed by his third goal joined to a hat-trick after a corner from Steven.

Steven also played in the second round win against Paraguay, but was in the quarter- final against Argentina when the score was 0:2 for Barnes, who came thus to its first use, replaced. Barnes was only once overcome the Argentine defense and prepared the first goal before to 1:2, but this did not prevent England was eliminated from the tournament.

In the 1986/87 season Steven returned to the dominating English football team from Everton and won the championship by nine points. In addition, he was a regular during the qualifiers for the European Championships in Germany in 1988. When the tournament started in the summer of 1988, Steven had already accumulated 22 internationals.

The European developed with three defeats in their three group games for England to great disappointment. Steven missed it the first game against Ireland, then, however, took part in the 1-3 defeat against the Netherlands, after his team-mate Stevens, was made primarily responsible due to a weak performance against the Dutch striker Marco van Basten, who scored a hat-trick. In the meaningless game against the Soviet Union Steven was also in the team, but could not prevent the worst performance of the tournament in England.

England's national team was heavily criticized at home. However, Robson remained in the trainer responsibility, and Steven should continue to be considered for the upcoming qualifiers for the 1990 World Cup in Italy. His teammate on the right side, Stevens, Everton left but to face the Rangers to join, and Steven could hardly build a new axis with the substitute Neil McDonald. Its shape deteriorated in 1989 and he was with the Scottish national team Pat Nevin a serious competitor on its position. Everton ended the season without a title and lost again in the FA Cup final against Liverpool. Steven was not appointed until the end of the season back in the England team and then played in the victory in the Rous Cup in the match against Scotland, England could win.

The time for change had come for Steven and Souness, now coach of the Rangers, offered him the opportunity to renew the old axis. Despite lucrative offers from other clubs ( although the Rangers were the dominant club in Scotland, possessed but seen european relatively little ambition ), Steven decided in a much criticized by the public decision to continue to play at Ibrox Park. As one of the main reasons to avoid the European ban on English clubs, which was after the disaster at Heysel Stadium still valid and Everton (and Steven ) stop them from being able to participate in European club competitions appeared. After a total of 60 goals in 299 games Steven left the Everton FC for a fee of £ 1.5 million towards Scotland.

Stevens form continued to improve, and Robson called him back into the England squad, although Waddle and Barnes were the players and Steven Hodge now preferred. Steven was then in the 22-man squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

He came first in the tournament can not be used until it was then replaced in the quarter- final against Cameroon in the second half for Terry Butcher 's team-mate Stevens at the Glasgow Rangers, following a temporary residue. The same change took place in the semifinal against Germany, where England after a 1-1 draw after regular time lost on penalties. From the beginning, he was then in the game for third place going into the England losing to Italy 1-2.

Robson's successor as national coach, Graham Taylor, Steven sat down in a few more friendlies, but maintained at the qualifiers for the European Championships in Sweden in 1992 on him. Shortly before the start of the tournament the English team suffered major injury concerns, so that Steven Taylor has been re-appointed to the team to provide support to the generally regarded as a weak point right. Steven played in the first two scoreless games against Denmark and France and was the third game, which England lost with 1:2 and caused the premature end, removed from the team. Stevens National team career was subsequently terminated after 36 games and four goals.

In 1991 Steven moved for a transfer fee of 5.5 million pounds to Olympique Marseille, where he played one season and won the French championship. He then returned for 2.4 million pounds to the Rangers back. In the Rangers he won to 1994 four Scottish Championships title and missed a ceremony for the subsequent championships in 1995 and 1996 respectively because of too low insert speeds. In 1997, Steven stepped down as football players.

Since his retirement from active sports Steven has often worked for the domestic media and became known as co- reporter for the BBC during the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. In addition, he is active for the Irish radio station RTE.
