1,1,1-trimethylolpropane is an organic compound selected from the group of alcohols, is in the form of a white, combustible powder.

Production and representation

1,1,1- trimethylol propane is produced from formaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide, which first react two moles of formaldehyde in an aldol reaction with butyraldehyde to form 2,2-bis- hydroxymethylbutanal; Subsequently, a Cannizzaro reaction with a further mole of formaldehyde takes place, wherein the aldehyde group is reduced to the alcohol.

Properties

1,1,1 -trimethylolpropane has three alcohol groups, thereby making it possible to cross-link polymers in three dimensions.

Use

1,1,1- trimethylol propane is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic compounds ( for example, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate ( TMPTMA ), for polyurethanes, polyester polyols and polyether polyols, binders and adhesives, synthetic lubricants, polyester and alkyd paints ). These are used in the furniture, construction and automotive industries.
