Trinitarian steeple
A Clocher Trinitaire is a special form of the bell gable with three - usually the same high - tips. Such gable are typical of churches in the Pays de Soule (Basque: Xiberoa or Soule ) in the French part of the Basque Country.
Function
In most Clochers Trinitaires is bell gable. In a few examples, but no bells are available, so that an ecclesiastical function is not (no longer ) visible.
Architecture
In most cases, when the façade wall Clochers only Trinitaires extended upwards and terminates in three peaks. In the church of Saint Jacques- le- Majeur from Saint- Yaguen one of the tips is designed as a stone stair tower; the other two have on their back wooden galleries, of which the formerly well- existing bells were achievable. However, the design overall, also significant defensive aspects.
Symbolism
Any existing symbolism of the three peaks is unclear. Some see them as a sign of the Trinity of God, others bring in connection with the Passion of Christ and see them as evidence of the three crosses on Mount Calvary.
