Aussurucq

Aussurucq (Basque Altzürükü ) is a commune in the French part of the Basque Country with 252 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Pyrénées- Atlantiques in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to Arrondissement Oloron -Sainte -Marie and the Canton Mauléon- Licharre.

Location

Aussurucq lies at the foot of the Massif of Arbailles (highest peak 1286 meters) and is only about ten kilometers in a north-easterly direction away from the cantonal capital Mauléon- Licharre. The place belongs to former Basque province of Soule.

Economy

The small mountain village Aussurucq is still very agriculturally oriented. The Basque cheese Ossau -Iraty, a cheese made from sheep's milk, is produced here. Field economy is not operating.

Attractions

  • The Church of Aussurucq is - slightly increased - in the center and, with its Clocher Trinitaire and its vestibule to the typical regional buildings in the Pays de Soule. Inside, it is only one nave and provided with a wooden ceiling. A curiosity of the structure is the attached to the roof slope clock. In the surrounding cemetery there are still a few Basque grave stelae ( hilarri ).
  • The architectural history of the Château de Ruthie dates back to the 11th century. The visible today date from the 15th ( round towers ) and 16th century ( middle part ); behind that are further additions in the 19th century. From here came Pierre de Charritte de Ruthie, the confessor of Francis I. The building is now used as a town hall.
