Tristel-Formation

The Tristel formation is a Cretaceous stratigraphic formation that, Engadine window, Rechnitz windows and many other localities in the eastern and western Alps occurs in the Tauern window. It is part of Bündnerschiefer or the Penninic units of the Alps.

Was deposited Tristel the formation of Unteraptium to Oberbarremium. It consists of a sequence of limestones, marls, and shales. Due to the strong deformation, the thickness is difficult to estimate, but is on average between 150 and 250 m. The deposit is in the form turbiditischer beds.

The Tristel formation occupies a low position within the units of the Valais ocean. They can be correlated with the Klus formation and the Couches de l' Aroley formation due to its. All three Formation mark the initial stage of the grave breakdown phase of the Valais Ocean and represent the lowest part of the Valais trilogy

The Tristel lineup is part of Rhenodanubian group.

Type profile

The type of profile Tristel formation is located in the vicinity of the Naafkopfs in Austria - Liechtenstein border area ( Naafkopf47.0607679.60705 ). The profile is on the Liechtenstein side in a rocky ridge called Tristel, Jesfürggli. The first description of the profile was published by Benno Schwizerstrasse 1984. The formation is named after a rock in Jestal back, the " Tristel ".
