Octoxinol 9 ( INN) is a p-tert- octyl phenol derivative with a polyethylene glycol side chain with 9 to 10 ethylene oxide units. It is a nonionic surfactant from the group of octylphenol ethoxylates. A well-known product of this series is Triton ® X-100.

Properties

Octoxinol 9 can change the melting behavior of DNA double strands.

Use

Octoxinol 9 is used as a detergent use in biochemistry. Since it does not denature proteins, it is used to extract the membrane proteins in their native conformation, in contrast to membranes made of SDS. It is also used for virus inactivation by the solvent detergent method.

Octoxinol 9 is used as a substitute substance for the spermicide nonoxynol 9 and as a pharmaceutical excipient.
