Trollius

Globe flower (Trollius europaeus)

The globe flower (Trollius ) are a genus of flowering plants of the family Ranunculaceae ( Ranunculaceae ). It occurs in the temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere. The only native species in Europe is the Globe-flower (Trollius europaeus).

Description

The species of the genus Trollius are perennial herbaceous plants. All species are virtually hairless. There are undergraduate and exchange constant in most species distributed on the stem leaves. The petioles are shorter, the higher the leaves are on the stem. In most species the leaves are finger-shaped divided into five to seven oval, three-lobed sections, or at least cut very deep finger-shaped.

In terminal inflorescences stand together one to three flowers, or individually on long stalks. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry. Five to nine, rarely more sepals present, they are kronblattartig colored, usually yellow, in some species, but also off-white, orange, or reddish, with a kind bluish purple. They are usually broadly oval or roundish. In some species they are so incurved that the whole flower has a spherical shape. In most but they are flat. The petals are similar colored like the sepals, but much narrower, mostly linear to narrowly oval, and nailed short at the bottom. Located just above the base of the petals nectaries.

The fruits are pomes, which consist of beaked Balgfrüchten.

Distribution and habitat requirements

The Trollius species occur in the temperate and arctic latitudes of the northern hemisphere ( North America and Eurasia ).

The majority of the species grows in open, wet locations, such as on wet meadows, at the source or marshy places.
