Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity

Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Using the Capacity ( TEAC ), the antioxidant capacity of a sample are given. In measuring the vitamin E derivative is Trolox as a reference, so the result is given in Trolox equivalents. The TEAC value is often used when comparing polyphenol samples.

The principle of measurement is based on the reaction of diammonium 2, 2'- azino- di ( 3- ethylbenzthiazoline )-6 -sulfonate (ABTS ) to the antioxidant contained in the medium to be examined. ABTS is in a oxidative atmosphere a stable green colored radical cation, which loses its color upon reaction with antioxidant substances. By means of photometric measurement of the ABTS solution at 734 nm before and after a defined time period (usually 6 minutes) after the addition of antioxidants is obtained an absorbance difference from which, by comparison with the Trolox caused by reduction in the absorbance in various concentrations of the antioxidant capacity of the investigated substance is determined.
