Tropolys

Tropolys was until 2006 an independent telephone company, which offered fixed lines in several regions of Germany. It consisted of a composite of 14 local telephone companies (known as city carriers ) and was one of the competitors of Deutsche Telekom in the provision of full connections. In 2006, the company has been merged into Versatel Germany. CEO of the new group is the previous Tropolys CEO, Peer Knauer.

The company was founded in 2000 as a merger of three Westphalian telephone companies, TeleBeL (Wuppertal), CNE ( food) and Citykom (Münster).

The network of former Tropolys covers part of North Rhine -Westphalia (mainly Ruhrgebiet), Hesse, Saxony -Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia and the urban areas in addition to around Potsdam, Mainz and Saarbrücken.

The shares of the company were acquired in May 2004 by the private equity firm Apax (63 %), the 14 municipal corporations ( 32% ) and the Tropolys management (5%) of the Finnish telecom company Elisa. 2003 Tropolys achieved a turnover of 134 million euros. In the third quarter of 2004, sales of 33.4 million euros and operating profit was 3.8 million euros before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

Apax sold in June 2006, their participation in Tropolys for € 108 million of its own participation Versatel.
