Trox sabulosus

Bone beetle Trox sabulosus

Trox sabulosus is a beetle of the family of Erdkäfer ( Trogidae ). These were previously provided to the scarab beetles, because the construction of the sensor is similar in both families. The eight to nine millimeters long animal feeds on animal remains. Occasionally the German name Breitstreifiger Erdkäfer or bone beetles are used.

Body of the beetle

The beetle is brown black, the sensor rust. The often abraded aged bristles are brownish - yellow. The body is short obovate and distinctly rounded.

The head is retracted into the prothorax. The sensors are zehngliedrig, the last three terms form a fan which is matte by the fine hairs. The first member of the flagellum is long and slightly hollowed on the underside. The mouthparts are directed downwards and not lie with the head shield in one plane. The upper jaw are short with small, almost smooth grinding surface. The pine buttons are rather short, the end link oblong. The third element is thickened labial palpi ovate.

The pronotum is laterally and at the base (this is the back side of the wing covers to go ) margins. Laterally he concludes with a series of short bristles, sitting at the base less regularly slightly longer bristles. The curved plate is roughly sculptured, dotted deep and also has rows of bristles.

The elytra cover the body end. Each wing-cover carrying a ten strip of shallow dimples ( in Figure 3 partially green tinted). The strips are compared with other species of the genus wide, almost as wide as the interval between the stripes. This explains the German name part breitstreifig. On the third, fifth, seventh and ninth interspace ( in Figure 3 partially red tinted) is lined with larger tubercles, which are covered with short strong bristles and therefore form large bristle spots. On the straight spaces ( in Figure 3 partially yellow tinted) sit less dense minor elevations. They are also provided with bristles and form small Borstentüpfelchen. At the age of beetles is largely bare ( Fig. 1).

The front chest ( Prosternum ) is extended between the front legs to the back. This Prosternalfortsatz is short and pointed. The abdomen shows only five sternites. The hips of the middle pair of legs are very small and roundish. The legs have five-membered tarsi, the front legs are formed by the toothed outer edge of the rails as grave legs.

Way of life

The heat-loving beetles can produce by rubbing the abdomen on the elytra chirping noises. The way it is not unusual to sandy areas with sparse vegetation. You are looking for carrion there on dry, old bones, rags and skins, leather, hooves, feathers and Gewölle. In a French insect Forum should be noted that the type can be well baited with Fuchskot and adult animals are found in the spring.

Dissemination

The species is widespread in almost all of Europe. Overall, the entire Palearctic is almost settled, from Europe to Siberia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia to Korea. Animals from Japan are the subspecies fujiokai Ochi, assigned to 2000. In the south, includes the area of Asia Minor and Syria

Taxonomy and systematics

The genus Trox is represented worldwide with 46 species in Europe with 21 species, all belonging to the subgenus Trox. In Central Europe, one meets about eight species of Trox .. sabulosus is the type species of the genus Trox.

The species was 1758 naturae than 33 species of the genus Scarabaeus first described by Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema. The short description is with the words " Habitat in Europae terra sabulosa " (Latin: lives in sandy soil in Europe) supplemented. This explains the style name sabulosus (Latin sabulosus = sandy). The genus Trox in 1775 split off by Fabricius of Scarabaeus. The genus name Trox ( AltGr. Τροξ trox rodents) may refer to the fact that the upper jaw is forked (Latin maxilla bifida )
