Troy ounce

The ounce is a Massemaß for precious metals. Your weight is the pharmacist - ounce ( 1 oz.tr. = 31.1034768 grams ), but only refers to the precious metal content. The weight of any shares alloy of base metals and impurities is therefore deducted from the total weight. It is referred to in the Anglo-American system of measurement as a troy ounce, named after the French city of Troyes, an important medieval trading center. Ounce derives from uncia, the Latin word for twelfth.

The ounce is used mainly for mass indication of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum and palladium), such as bullion coins. Internationally, gold, silver, platinum and palladium prices in U.S. dollars are quoted per troy ounce.

A troy ounce equivalent according to the present definition exactly 31.1034768 grams.

The LBMA and LPPM standard bars have a fine weight of 400 troy ounces.
