True frog

Tooth frog ( Limnonectes macrodon )

The Real frogs ( Ranidae ) form a family within the Anura ( Anura ), which is distributed worldwide. In Greenland, in Antarctica, the Caribbean Islands, in the desert areas of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as well as in central and southern South America and the largest part of Australia, it naturally lacks.

To anatomical and morphological features compare Neobatrachia and True frogs (Rana ). Representatives of this family are between five and more than 30 inches long, with among them the Goliath frog ( Conraua goliath ) is also the largest Froschlurch the world. The largest genus with about 260 species of the family are the eponymous Real frogs. Typically, the Ranidae lay their eggs into waters and carry out an indirect development via a aquatile Kaulquappenphase.

At a higher taxonomic level, the term "frog" does not limit sharply - so it is also used for species other families or even another suborder of Anura belong ( see, for example: frogs, point frogs, Australian Südfrösche, poison dart frogs, tree frogs). For the term " toad " shall apply mutatis mutandis the same.

Taxonomy

The systematics of the family Ranidae is controversial. It is hard to find different representations of their taxonomic structure. The following table is based on the Web at " AmphibiaWeb " (see Related links) that lists about 50 genera with more than 850 species. In this form it is probably a paraphyletic Sammeltaxon. One of them completely different table provides the website " Amphibian Species of the World" (see Related links) with only 16 genera ( including but partly other ) and about 340 species. The remaining taxa are assigned there several others, partly newly created families ( Dicroglossidae, Micrixalidae, Nyctibatrachidae, Petropedetidae, Phrynobatrachidae, Ptychadenidae, Pyxicephalidae, Ranixalidae ). Under the genus Rana nearly 50 species are listed there just yet, for other new names are postulated ( for example Pelophylax for the represented also in Central Europe water frogs). This system is viewed as being controversial and partially still quite provisional.
