The Italian Trust Territory of Somalia (Italian Amministrazione fiduciaria italiana della Somalia, Acronym " AFIS " ) was one of the administered by the United Nations and Italy Trust Territories in East Africa 1947-1960.

As a hymn served Il Canto degli Italiani. Official language was Italian. The area encompassed approximately 500,000 km ². The currency was the Lira.

Development

In 1941, Italian Somaliland was occupied by troops of Great Britain and South Africa during the Allied campaign in East Africa and Great Britain had assumed the administration of the Italian colony.

The British had the area to continue to manage to November 1949, when the United Nations decided to entrust the territory of the former Italian Somalia Italy for 10 years. Italy then took control of the old colony on January 1, 1950 and held it until the Granting of Independence on July 1, 1960, when it became independent.

It first parliamentary elections were held in 1956. Three years later, in 1959, the last parliamentary elections were held in the Italian administrative region. Immediately after the end of the Italian trusteeship, it merged with the former British colony of Somaliland (which had gained independence on 26 June 1960 ) and has since formed the Somali Republic.
