Tsandryphsh

Zandrypsch ( Abkhaz Цандрыҧшь; Russian Цандрыпш, formerly Gantiadi ) is a town with 5170 inhabitants in Abkhazia. It is located in the northern part of the country, Rajon Gagra near the Russian border. Zandrypsch situated on the Black Sea, at the mouth of the river Chaschupse.

The population in 2011 amounted to a total of 5170 people, of which 55.9 % Armenians, Abkhazians 19.6% and 18.4 % were Russians. Smaller minorities were Ukrainians ( 1.2%), Georgians ( 0.9 %) and Greece (0.7%) are the ruins of a basilica in the village

In ancient times the city was known as Sautschi. The present place name derives from the Abkhazian nobility " Zanba ". In 1867, Russian colonists near Zandrypsch a settlement called " Pilenkowo ", which merged with the former soon. The name Pilenkowo was then used for the entire settlement. During the period of Stalinism, the town was renamed Gantiadi 1944, georgian for dawn. In 1993, the return renamed Zandrypsch.
