Tubantes

The Tubanti or Tubanti (Latin: Tubantes, Greek Τούβαντοι Toubantoi ) were a Germanic tribe, the county of Bentheim lived towards the end of the great migration to the east of present-day Netherlands in today's region of Twente in the Borken / Gronau, Kreis Steinfurt and circle.

In the reports of the historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus about the expedition of Germanicus in 14 AD to northern Germany and into the territory of the present Netherlands the Tubanti be mentioned as " Tubanti ". The name of Twente for today's Dutch region in the former settlement area of this ethnic group is derived from the term " Tubanti ". There are a Dutch newspaper in Enschede named Tubantia ( De Twentsche Courant Tubantia ). In the name of this newspaper and in the name of sport associations (eg football club HVV Tubantia, Hengelo ) the name of the Tubanti lives on. There was also a Dutch ship called Tubantia.
